Program Length & Format

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution required by July 1 of application year
  • Minimum cumulative GPA 2.75 (UMKC/transfer coursework); UM System GPA 2.75 if applicable
  • Minimum grade of B- required in each prerequisite course
  • Chemistry with lab, Anatomy & Physiology with lab, and Microbiology must be no older than five years
  • Resume or CV and personal statement essays required
  • Minimum 30 hours of direct human patient interaction in a healthcare setting within two years prior to application

Prerequisites

  • Anatomy & Physiology I and II totaling 8 credits (N120 and N160 or equivalents)
  • Chemistry with lab (CHEM 115 and CHEM 115L or equivalent)
  • Microbiology (BIOL 112 or equivalent; lab not required)
  • Human Nutrition (CHEM 206 or equivalent)
  • Human Growth and Development (N252 or equivalent)
  • All prerequisites must be completed by the end of the spring semester of the application year

Deadlines

  • Personal statement prompts available when application is open between November 1 and January 31
  • Supplemental clinical application completed after general UMKC application between November and January
  • Applicants have until May to complete prerequisites after supplemental application submission
  • Applications for Fall 2025 closed; application for Fall 2026 to open later in the year

Application

  • Apply to UMKC under Health Sciences - Accelerated (general UMKC application)
  • Complete School of Nursing supplemental/clinical application when posted (November)
  • Submit official college transcripts (UMKC and any transfer institutions)
  • Provide resume/CV, personal statement essays, and documentation of 30 direct patient interaction hours
  • If prerequisites taken at another college, send official transcripts to UMKC Admissions as soon as grades are posted

Selection Process

  • Applications reviewed by SoNHS appointed committee using a holistic review
  • Committee evaluates prerequisite GPA, cumulative GPA, personal essays, reference forms, and healthcare hours
  • Review process begins in spring shortly after January 31 application deadline
  • Admission offers issued based on committee decision and space availability

Wait List Policies

  • Committee issues acceptance, wait-list, and denial letters
  • Wait-listed applicants may be admitted later if accepted students decline seats
  • Accepted students receive time (summer) to prepare for Fall start

Cost & Financial Aid

  • Program major credits: 68 credit hours in the nursing major; total program around 90 credit hours including ~22 prerequisite credits
  • Tuition calculation: multiply per-credit tuition rate by 68 (major) or 90 (including prerequisites)
  • 23 of the 68 major credit hours are assessed an additional Clinical Lab Fee; multiply that fee by 23 and add to tuition calculation

Clinical & Simulation Lab

  • 1,050 clinical hours for Accelerated students (program page)
  • Clinical experiences in adult medical-surgical, pediatric, obstetric, mental health, community health, leadership, and critical/emergency care nursing
  • 300-hour final-semester capstone/internship in a specialty area
  • Clinical sites include urban and suburban agencies and hospitals; optional weekend clinical experiences available
  • Clinical courses include skills laboratory and high-fidelity simulation center experiences

Credit Transfer

  • If taking prerequisites at another institution, confirm transferability with UMKC advisors or transfer guides
  • Official transcripts from other institutions must be sent to UMKC Admissions as soon as grades are posted
