Program Length & Format

  • Full-time
  • five consecutive semesters (fall, spring, summer, fall, spring)
  • Total of 120-126 credit hours including general education, prerequisites, and nursing courses
  • Nursing courses taught on-campus only
  • Summer enrollment required

Admission Requirements

  • Anyone can apply regardless of previous degree type (high school students, BA/BS degree holders, etc)
  • Admission to Old Dominion University as a degree-seeking undergraduate student required
  • Completion of at least 30 credit hours applicable to the BSN before application
  • Minimum GPA of 3.00 overall for consideration; admitted students typically have at least a 3.6 GPA
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses with a grade of C (2.00) or better before admission
  • Transfer credit evaluation required for transfer students to confirm course equivalency
  • Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to the Nursing program
  • Separate School of Nursing Supplemental Application must be submitted by February 15 for fall admission

Entrance Exams

  • Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) pre-admissions aptitude testing required as part of applicant review

Prerequisites

  • Completion of designated lower-division general education and prerequisite courses with grades of C or better
  • Courses include anatomy and physiology (I and II), microbiology with lab, chemistry with lab, statistics, psychology, sociology, and composition
  • All prerequisites must be completed prior to enrollment in nursing courses

Deadlines

  • Supplemental application to the School of Nursing and supporting transcripts must be submitted by February 15 each year
  • Program admits students for fall semester only

Application

  • Apply to Old Dominion University as an undergraduate student
  • Submit School of Nursing Supplemental Application with photocopies of all previous college transcripts in one envelope
  • Transfer students must have transfer credit evaluation completed before applying
  • Personal statements may be obtained through writing prompts or interviews as part of application review
  • Competitive admission process using a balance of GPA, HESI scores, applicant experiences and attributes, and personal statements or interviews
  • Admissions decisions communicated by program director

Cost & Financial Aid

  • Virginia resident tuition approximately $268 per credit hour for coursework
  • Active duty military rate approximately $250 per credit hour
  • Non-resident tuition approximately $953.50 per credit hour
  • Non-refundable program fee of $375 assessed each semester for program-related expenses
  • Additional costs include textbooks, clinical requirements, and other fees

Clinical & Simulation Lab

  • Clinical rotations at hospitals and community health organizations in the area including specialized settings
  • Use of standardized patient experiences and simulation center for hands-on practice
  • Telehealth Center for learning technology-enhanced care delivery
  • Clinical courses include community health, adult health, pediatric, behavioral health, recovery, and leadership

Credit Transfer

  • Transfer students must have transfer credit evaluated by the transfer evaluation unit in the Office of Admissions
  • Prerequisite courses may be completed at other institutions if approved and completed with grade C or better
