Program Length & Format

  • 15-month, summer-to-summer format (start in May, finish in August of the following year), four semesters
  • Full-time
  • Delivery: online and hybrid theory courses plus in-person clinical experiences
  • First summer includes on-campus time of 4–5 days on approximately 4–5 occasions; subsequent semesters require on-site clinical attendance in Wyoming

Admission Requirements

  • Previous baccalaureate degree required (must be completed by December 2021 in source text) with minimum cumulative GPA 2.5
  • Admission to the University of Wyoming required by the 2nd Thursday of December application deadline
  • Active CNA certification or LPN licensure required and must be on file by May 1
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR for Healthcare Providers (American Heart Association) required and must be current by May 1

Entrance Exams

  • TOEFL iBT required for non-native English-speaking applicants: minimum total score 90 with component minimums — Reading 21, Listening 21, Speaking 25, Writing 23
  • Official AP, IB, CLEP, and math placement test scores must be on file with UW Admissions when applicable

Prerequisites

  • Total of ten prerequisite courses required; all must be grade C or better and meet a minimum combined prerequisite GPA of 2.75
  • Core prerequisite list includes: PSYC 1000 (3), FCSC 1141 (3), STAT 2050 or 2070 (4), LIFE 1010 (General Biology), CHEM 1020 (General Chemistry I)
  • Anatomy/microbiology/physiology requirements: KIN 2040 and KIN 2041 (Human Anatomy and Lab, 4), MICR/MOLB 2021 or MICR 2240 (Microbiology, 4), ZOO 3115 (Human Systems Physiology, 4)
  • Pharmacology and pathophysiology requirements: PHCY 3450 (Foundational Pathophysiology, 4) and PHCY 4470 (Fundamentals of Pharmacology, 4); both must be upper-division (3000/4000) and require a syllabus for evaluation; PHCY 3450 and PHCY 4470 must be completed within three years of the May start date; PHCY 4470 must be completed by May 1
  • Prerequisite courses may be in progress at time of application

Deadlines

  • application opens September 15 each year for May start date
  • University of Wyoming admission and official transcripts due by the 2nd Thursday of December
  • All prerequisite coursework must be completed by December except PHCY 4470, which must be completed by May 1
  • CNA certification and BLS CPR card must be on file by May 1

Application

  • Submit University of Wyoming application (applicants not currently enrolled at UW must apply separately)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended through the end of the summer semester must be submitted to UW Admissions by the December deadline
  • Official AP/IB/CLEP and math placement scores must be on record with UW Admissions
  • School of Nursing requires syllabi for evaluation of PHCY 3450 and PHCY 4470 if transfer or lower-division courses are used

Selection Process

  • School of Nursing evaluates transfer coursework for prerequisite equivalency; UW Registrar provides official transcript equivalency after admission
  • Provisional acceptance will be revoked if required CNA/LPN certification or CPR documentation is not on file by May 1

Clinical & Simulation Lab

  • 1,080 hours of hands-on clinical experiences required in the program
  • Acute care clinical experiences delivered face-to-face with onsite instructors at multiple Wyoming locations (past sites include Casper, Evanston, Gillette, Jackson, Wheatland, Rock Springs)
  • Fall and spring clinical groups typically consist of 6–8 students placed in healthcare agencies across Wyoming
  • Spring community health clinicals include required placements: 40 hours in Evanston, 40 hours in Lander, and 60 hours in either Casper or Gillette; remaining community health placements arranged near student residence
  • Final (second summer) semester is a full-time capstone clinical placement in a Wyoming acute care agency
  • Clinical simulation lab located at the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing on the UW campus

Credit Transfer

  • School of Nursing conducts initial transfer coursework evaluation as part of BRAND application to determine equivalency of prerequisite courses
  • UW Registrar performs official transcript evaluation after admission and assigns UW equivalencies and University Studies attributes
  • School of Nursing determines which transferred courses apply to the nursing curriculum; initial evaluations are unofficial until cleared by both the School of Nursing and the Registrar

International Students

  • TOEFL iBT minimum total score 90 with component minimums: Reading 21, Listening 21, Speaking 25, Writing 23
  • Official TOEFL scores must be submitted to UW Admissions
