Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution required
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher required
  • Successful completion of prerequisite courses required (see Prerequisites)
  • Applicants who lack NURS 240, NUTR 2110, and/or NURS 224 may be considered case-by-case and may take those courses during the program’s first semester
  • No UNM general education courses required for applicants with a prior bachelor’s degree

Entrance Exams

  • No entrance exam required for the Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN option
  • HESI exam not required

Prerequisites

  • Biology and chemistry sequence: BIO 1140 and BIO 1140L; CHEM 1120
  • Anatomy/Physiology and Microbiology: BIO 2210 (Anatomy & Phys I; lab recommended), BIOL 2225 & 2225L (Anatomy & Phys II with lab), BIO 2305 (Microbiology for Health Sciences lecture/lab)
  • Behavioral and quantitative courses: PSYCH 1110 (Introduction to Psychology); MATH 1350 (Introduction to Statistics) or equivalent
  • Nursing-related prerequisites: NURS 239 (Pathophysiology I); NURS 240 (Pathophysiology II) — NURS 240 may be taken per case-by-case policy
  • Additional prerequisites: NUTR 2110 (Human Nutrition); NURS 224 or PSYCH 2120 (Lifespan Growth and Development/Developmental Psychology)

Deadlines

  • Multiple program application deadlines/starts listed: Spring 1 deadline January 1; Spring 2 deadline March 1; Summer deadline May 15; Fall 1 deadline August 1; Fall 2 deadline October 1
  • Fall application cycle noted to open August 15 with priority deadline December 1 (priority-review timeline applies)

Application

Selection Process

  • Completed applications received by the stated deadlines are reviewed; priority-deadline applicants are reviewed earlier (approximately 4–6 week review period)

  • Accepted applicants must respond to offers within one week

Clinical & Simulation Lab

  • Clinical placements include UNM Health System (state Level 1 trauma center) and Sandoval Regional Medical Center
  • Additional clinical partners include New Mexico VA Health Care System, Lovelace Health System, Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Albuquerque Public Schools, and New Mexico Department of Health
  • Program reports about 99% of Pre-Licensure BSN Albuquerque campus students participate in clinical experiences within the UNM Health System
  • Simulation center facilities inventory: 24 clinic spaces; 7 debriefing rooms; 3 acute care rooms; 5 skills rooms with 6–8 beds each; community student waiting area/lounge
  • Simulation equipment includes high-fidelity manikins and low-fidelity manikins for skills practice

Credit Transfer

  • UNM provides a transfer evaluation process to determine how coursework from other institutions may apply toward UNM degree requirements and prerequisites
  • NURS 224 and NUTR 2110, if completed prior to admission, may transfer and reduce first-semester course load
