The number of LPN opportunities continue to grow annually with LPNs comprising 19% of the total nurses’ population in the state. Education is key to landing a steady career in practical nursing which is why it is important to find a good nursing school that will equip you to be ready for the health care environment.

Ashland Community and Technical College
The college was founded in 1938 and is located in Ashland, KY. ACTC is a two-year, public college and is a member of the KCTCS or Kentucky Community and Technical College Systems.
The school enrolls more than 4,000 students each year. It even grants diplomas, certificates and Associate’s Degrees in various areas of study. Its Practical Nursing program prepares students to begin practicing as LPNs under the supervision of a physician or nurse. In order to be admitted into the program, a student must first pass the COMPASS/ACT requirement. She must also have a GPA or 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale; must have completed the prerequisites including passing the nursing aide course; completed first level physiology and anatomy; completed the computer literacy course as well as the general psychology course.
Bluegrass Community and Technical College
BCTC is a public, two-year college in Lexington, KY which was established in 2005. It was established when the Central Kentucky Technical College and the Lexington Community College merged. All three campuses – Cooper, Leestown and Regency – are located in Lexington.
The college offers diploma, certificate and Associate’s degree levels with online and local programs. The technical college’s Practical Nursing Program is approved by the Kentucky State Board of Nursing. It effectively combines classroom and clinical instruction under the strict supervision of expert clinical instructors.
Graduates of the program who have also passed the Kentucky Board of Nursing requirements are eligible to apply to the NCLEX or National Council Licensure Exam.
Those who want to apply for the PN program should complete the application for admission. Admission to the technical college does not automatically mean admission to the Practical Nursing program.
Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College
Located in Cumberland, KY, it was established in 1960. SKCTC has Associate’s Degree programs in different areas of study. Their Practical Nursing program allows students to learn nursing fundamentals, basic nursing skills, theories. With the clinical instruction, students are bound to learn health care in different settings. Advancing to a degree program means the student must have finished certificate or diploma credits which can be applied to the Associate in Applied Science Degree.
