ADN Programs in California

The Associate Degree in Nursing or ADN program is specifically designed to give learners the skills and fundamental knowledge of a competent generalist nurse. It is a program that combines patient care simulation, classroom theory and clinical experience. The completion of both nursing core and general education courses is required in order to accomplish the ADN program.

A graduate of the ADN program must pass the NCLEX-RN or National Licensing Examination for RNs in order to acquire a nursing license.

ADN Admission Requirements

Because of the high demand for this program, the schools can become fairly selective about the students that they admit. California nursing schools look at entrance exam scores, standardized test scores, and previous college experience to find out which one is likely to accomplish the program. Some schools even require specific courses in science as prerequisites.

Nursing Schools in California

Citrus College – this college’s ADN program accepts applicants once every year for Fall admission. They do this for both the Generic and Advanced Placement choices. The filing dates are between January till April. Mailed applications are not entertained.

There is no waiting list for Citrus College and the students are given a single chance at repeating any science course that has a grade of C or below. The prerequisites for their program are courses in microbiology, human anatomy and English. It is recommended that the student is in the process of accomplishing at least two general education courses when the application is submitted.

Merritt College – situated in Oakland, California; these health care educators accept  applicants for their ADN program only once each year. Their ADN curriculum is a 2-year program that prepares students to become competent nurses.

Merritt College also has the Advanced Placement Option which sets up a seamless transition to the BSN program of Cal State East Bay. To do this, a student meets with the college counselor to evaluate his eligibility and coursework.

The Advanced Placement option also allows students to continue studying to a BSN program and be able to accomplish the program in just a year. It is a 12-month concentrated program where courses are taken online with the exception of the Community Health Practicum as well as the Health Assessment course.

Saddleback College – to get into their ADN program, an applicant must have completed biology, anatomy, physiology and microbiology. A GPA of 2.8 or higher is needed with a grade of C or better for the English 1A course. Upon satisfying the prerequisites, the student can then enroll in the college's ADN program which is one of the best that is offered in the state.
