Los Medanos College in Pittsburg is a public community college in eastern Contra Costa County. Nursing students typically come through one of three paths: the three-semester Vocational Nursing (LVN) certificate, the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) for RN licensure, or the LVN to RN transition option that places eligible LVNs into the third and fourth semesters of the RN sequence.
The RN program is structured as two academic years after prerequisites, with coursework covering medical-surgical, obstetric, pediatric, and psychiatric nursing across the lifespan. Alongside classroom instruction, students practice skills in an on-campus lab before moving into supervised clinical experiences arranged through Bay Area medical centers and healthcare agencies. For students who want early program clarity, the department also offers RNURS 1, a one-day Nursing Career Seminar that reviews the nursing role and LMC pathways and gives applicants a chance to talk with current students.
LMC’s nursing programs have a long local presence. The department notes its roots alongside the college’s opening in 1974, and both tracks are state-approved: the ADN program by the California Board of Registered Nursing and the vocational nursing program by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Application timing is structured, with the RN and LVN-RN transition cycle running each January for a fall start, while LVN applications run every three semesters.
On licensure outcomes, LMC’s average weighted NCLEX-RN pass rate is 94.8%, compared with the 2024 California average of 92.7%. For NCLEX-PN, the program’s average weighted pass rate is 76.0%, compared with the 2024 state average of 83.8%.
For students thinking ahead to a BSN, LMC also participates in a Concurrent Enrollment Program with CSU East Bay beginning Fall 2024, allowing some ADN students to complete ADN and BSN coursework in parallel, with specific additional prerequisite and GPA requirements.
The Los Medanos Associate Degree Program in Nursing is a two year program in addition to the completion of pre-requisite courses.
The program is designed to prepare qualified graduates for entry level positions in nursing. The program focuses on addressing healthcare needs in a range of aspects including medicine, surgery, pediatric care, obstetrics and psychiatric healthcare settings.
The curriculum is offered in a combination of in class room theoretical instruction and practical experience in campus laboratories and clinical experience in a variety of medical facilities and health care agencies in the community.
Admission Requirements:
The application period for the nursing program is between the January 2nd and the 1st of March.
