West Virginia University (WVU) is a public institution in Morgantown, West Virginia. It is part of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and was established in 1867. WVU started as the Agricultural College of West Virginia. However, it quickly began expanding its range of programs beyond agriculture. By the 1970s, the student population had exceeded 22,000 students. Over the years, the campus has grown to accommodate the increased demand. The Morgantown campus includes three sub-campuses. The downtown campus includes many buildings from the early days of the university, including eight buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places. WVU is now organized into 15 different degree-granting schools and colleges, including the WVU School of Nursing.
The WVU School of Nursing offers several nursing programs, including programs for traditional BSN, RN to BSN, and accelerated BSN. They also offer graduate-level programs such as MSN, RN to MSN, DNP, and Ph.D. programs. All programs are accredited by the CCNE. The traditional BSN program includes training at two state-of-the-art simulation centers and through clinical experiences at nearby healthcare facilities. Students may also participate in the WVU Health Sciences Student Computer Program, which provides students with laptops that they may use through graduation.
Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College is located in Mount Gay, West Virginia. Southern can trace its roots all the way back to 1960. It was originally a branch location of another college but it wound up becoming a stand-alone community college in 1970. Since that time, the school has been working diligently to provide affordable educational opportunities to the community. Students often attend Southern in order to take care of the first two years of college classes that are required for a bachelor’s degree. West Liberty University is a public university in West Liberty, West Virginia. It was established in 1837, making it the oldest institution of higher learning in the state. However, it did not achieve university status until 2008. West Liberty offers over 70 undergraduate degrees and several graduate programs. The university is structured into five professional colleges including the College of Sciences, which houses the Health Sciences department. In 2014, the $20 million Health Sciences Building was opened. The nursing programs and many other health sciences programs were moved to this new 70,000-square-foot facility. West Liberty also maintains a library containing more than 200,000 print volumes, which is one of the largest libraries in West Virginia.
Three CCNE-accredited BSN options are available at the university, including BSN, RN to BSN, and accelerated BSN programs. The nursing program became part of the university in the early 1970s. The RN to BSN program is offered online and designed to allow registered nurses to continue working while they earn their BSN degrees. Depending on prerequisite courses, some students may complete the RN to BSN program in three semesters. The traditional BSN program is designed to be completed in eight semesters and includes clinical rotations at local clinics and healthcare facilities.
West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech) is located in Beckley, West Virginia. WVU Tech was established way back in 1895 and has gone through a large number of name changes and other alterations over the years. It serves over 1000 students and is capable of awarding various bachelor’s degrees. One of the most popular programs at the school is the robust engineering program. WVU Tech also has a very good athletics department for students to enjoy. There are many different team sports available for students to consider at this school.
The WVU Tech nursing program has proven to be a very popular program throughout the years. The school has the distinction of being the only public institution in the southern portion of West Virginia that offers a baccalaureate degree in nursing. The curriculum of the program is thorough and nurses from WVU Tech go on to have lucrative careers in the field. The BSN program at WVU Tech has been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses.
