Wise County Vocational Technical School

The Wise County Vocational Technical School Practical Nursing Program is designed to prepare students for entry level jobs in nursing.

The program is open to high school seniors from Dickenson County, the City of Norton as well as the Wise County interested in the Practical Nursing Program or the preclinical phase.

Students enrolled in the program spend three hours a day in theoretical instruction or in practical experience in the nursing laboratory. Seniors return to regular high school classes for the rest of the day to meet general academic requirements for graduation.

Qualified adults are admitted into the program if there are any spaces not filled by high school seniors. Adults applying to the program are required to show a high school diploma or GED equivalency certificate.

Students affiliate with selected extended health care facilities for the clinical phase of the program including Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, Mountain View Regional Medical Center, and Norton Community Hospital.

The clinical phase requires students to commute daily to the clinical site for a period of six weeks. The schedule for the clinical phase is divided between clinical rotations in direct patient care and theoretical in classroom instruction.

Students who successfully complete both phases of the Practical Nursing program are eligible to apply to sit for the State Board Licensure Examination to become a licensed Practical Nurse.
