DNP & PhD Programs in Texas

As of 2013, there are 12 Doctor of Nursing Practice programs in the Lone Star State. Texas has consistently produced highly-educated nurses and leaders. AACN, in 2004, reported the outcome of their DNP Task Force wherein in all Advanced Practice Nursing programs will be stirred to the higher doctorate level by 2015. In 2005, Texas came up with its own DNP Roadmap Task Force. This task force is under the supervision of the Nursing Education Policy Coalition and the Texas Organization of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education.

If you are longing to attain the highest level of nursing education in Texas, you can start here -

University of Texas – Arlington

UT's full-time DNP is an effective post-masters program that prepares nurse practitioners to exhibit leadership, innovation and clinical expertise. Graduates of this program are experts in evidence-based nursing practice as they studied courses such as vulnerable populations, research, translation of evidence in clinical practice, epidemiology as well as specialized clinical practice.

The 36 hour credit program makes use of intensive traditional classroom learning. This school's curriculum also meets the AACN Essentials for Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice stated in August 2006. A student selects three semester hours for her electives.

University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio

This nursing school's full-time DNP program is for a student who already has master’s degree in nursing and has a graduate level specialty preparation. There are two leadership tracks for students to choose from – Executive Administrative Management and the Nurse Practitioner tracks.

As a Doctoral program student, you must have 1,000 clinical or practicum hours post Bachelors to DNP. Admission is offered every Fall semester each year with the deadline for applications set at February 1.
