The Medical University of South Carolina is a public institution in Charleston, South Carolina. It was established in 1824 as the College of Medicine. 30 students enrolled during the first year. The university has grown and now enrolls several thousand students each year. However, it is still a small university with a low student to teacher ratio. It is also one of the oldest operating schools of medicine in the country. The university is also home to a medical center, a center for research, and a public hospital. It is structured into six colleges for the education of health professionals, including the College of Nursing.

The nursing program was started in 1884 and incorporated into the university in 1919. The programs offered at the university include traditional BSN, accelerated BSN, and MSN programs. The university also offers a DNP and a Ph.D. program, along with BSN to DNP and BSN to Ph.D. programs. All programs offered at the university are accredited by the CCNE. The RN to BSN program is offered entirely online over the course of 12 months. The accelerated and traditional BSN programs are taught on campus and include classroom, clinical, and lab instruction to provide students with practical and theoretical training.

  • CLEP and Excelsior exams accepted for some prerequisites if taken after 2001 (per human growth and development guidance)

  • Out-of-state clinical restrictions: currently unable to accept applicants from Washington, Oregon, Arizona, and Louisiana for distance clinical placements (applicants responsible for state board requirements for out-of-state clinicals)
