Florida International University (FIU) is a public university in Miami. It is one of ten campuses that comprise the State University System of Florida and had a total student body of 56,000 students during the 2017 school year. Over 92% of students live off-campus. As the name suggests, Florida International University also attracts a lot of international students. In fact, about 7% of the student body are international students. FIU offers over 280 majors and 191 programs of study through 23 schools and colleges. It is the largest university in South Florida and the fourth largest in the United States based on the enrollment numbers.

Several nursing programs are offered through Florida International University College of Nursing and Health Sciences, including BSN, RN to BSN, accelerated BSN, MSN, DNP, Ph.D., and BSN to Ph.D. The college has close affiliations with many healthcare facilities in the area, including hospitals and doctor’s offices, giving students the hands-on learning needed to succeed. The traditional BSN program is offered on-campus, while the RN to BSN path is an online-only program. There are also many BSN to DNP programs available at the university. All programs offered through the college are accredited by the CCNE and the Florida State Board of Nursing.

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from a regionally accredited institution; degree must be completed by the end of the Spring term of the year of application
  • Minimum cumulative Bachelor’s degree GPA: 3.0
  • Minimum cumulative GPA for all nursing prerequisite courses: 3.25
  • Minimum grade of C or higher required for each prerequisite course
  • Science prerequisites must have been completed within the last 10 years
  • Applicants may have up to two non-science prerequisites in progress at time of application; no science prerequisites may be in progress at time of application
  • One science failure allowed if the same course is successfully repeated; two science failures disqualify the application
  • Applicants with a C- or below in any science prerequisite may repeat that course only once

Entrance Exams

  • ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) Edition VII required; other exams (e.g., HESI) not accepted
  • Minimum required scores: 70% Total Score and 62% Science Score
  • TEAS must be taken in person at an approved testing site
  • Maximum of two TEAS attempts allowed per application cycle; 30-day wait period between attempts as required by testing center
  • TEAS scores valid for two years; upload Individual Performance Profile PDF to NursingCAS

Prerequisites

  • Statistical Methods: STA 2023 or STA 2122
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II with labs: BSC 2085/2085L and BSC 2086/2086L
  • Introductory Microbiology with lab: MCB 2000/2000L
  • Survey/Principles of Chemistry with lab: CHM 1033/1033L (or equivalent)
  • Nutrition: HUN 2201
  • Human Growth and Development: DEP 2000 (DEP 2004 accepted in transfer guides)
  • Psychology: PSY 2012 or equivalent (SYG 2000 or SOP 3004 listed as equivalents)
  • All prerequisite courses must be completed by the end of the Spring semester for Fall admission

Deadlines

  • Application cycle for Fall admission opens August 7 and closes in early May (applications accepted through May 1 for Fall admission in multiple notices)
  • AO BSN admits students for the Fall term only

Application

  • Submit FIU Undergraduate Application and separate NursingCAS application; select AO BSN track
  • Pay required application fees for FIU and NursingCAS
  • Send official transcripts from all institutions to FIU Undergraduate Admissions (P.O. Box 659003, Miami, FL 33265-9003) and one sealed copy of each transcript to NursingCAS
  • Upload ATI TEAS Individual Performance Profile PDF to NursingCAS Documents section
  • Bring unofficial transcripts to an advising appointment; attendance at an information session or advising appointment encouraged

Selection Process

  • AO BSN is a limited-access program with competitive admissions based on comprehensive evaluation
  • Applications are processed on a rolling basis and decisions are released as made
  • Applicants who apply by the published deadline will be considered; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission
  • Applicants previously not accepted must submit a new application for the next cycle

Credit Transfer

  • NWCNHS Student Services reviews course equivalency for transfer credit
  • Science prerequisites older than 10 years must be repeated to meet admission requirements
  • Course equivalencies provided for multiple partner colleges (e.g., Miami Dade College, Broward College, Palm Beach State College)

International Students

  • Foreign-educated physicians seeking AO BSN: minimum 2.00 degree GPA from previously awarded Doctor of Medicine demonstrated via course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-accredited agency or official translated transcripts
  • Required prerequisites for foreign-educated physicians: HUN 2201, DEP 2000, and STA 2023 or STA 2122; prerequisites must be completed by end of Spring term and completed within last 10 years (foreign-educated physicians may have all three prerequisites in progress at time of application)
  • Foreign-educated physicians must meet TEAS requirements and may not hold an RN license from a previous nursing program
