Bowie State University (BSU) is a public university in Bowie, Maryland. It is part of the 10-campus University System of Maryland. It is also the oldest historically black university in the state and one of the oldest in the United States. The university was founded in 1865 as the Baltimore Normal School for Colored Teachers. It went through several name changes before being named Bowie State University in 1988 and joining the University System of Maryland. BSU offers 22 undergraduate degree programs and 19 master’s programs. The nursing programs are offered through the BSU College of Professional Studies. The campus location in Bowie is about 25 miles away from Baltimore and 17 miles from Washington D.C.
The nursing programs offered at BSU include traditional BSN, accelerated BSN, RN to BSN, and MSN programs, which are accredited by the CCNE. The baccalaureate programs were accredited in 1988, while the master’s program was accredited in 1994. Students develop their skills at a state-of-the-art nursing simulation lab and a new learning center. The college also helps students secure internships at local award-winning healthcare facilities. The BSN program has been offered for almost 30 years and includes partnerships with many hospitals and medical centers in the area, including the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
